South Axis (Zuidas)
Not only is the South Axis in Amsterdam one of the largest urban development projects currently being carried out in Europe, it also aims to give Amsterdam a new image that will focus less heavily on the past. The aim of the South Axis is to create an area where living, working and leisure activities all overlap, against a backdrop of large-scale architecture designed by renowned architects. The plans include a budget reserved for funding art projects during the design phase and for the definitive area. This means that unlike in previous projects, the art intended for public space will not be added afterwards, but will be included as part of the development process. The Virtueel Museum Zuidas is responsible for the implementation. The Virtueel Museum Zuidas and the Stichting Kunst en Openbare Ruimte will fund the Unit to keep a close eye on the working methods and the results. The Unit will allocate research assignments to artists and research institutes and organise lectures and symposiums revolving round the course of events in the South Axis.
